Which Celebrities Have Trumped Depression?

The media has been quick to put the spotlight on celebrities who are suffering from depression, but they have been slow to cover those who have successfully overcome it. Many people are under the assumption that the rich and famous are happy due to their extravagant lifestyles and wealth, but the following examples are evidence that money and fame alone do not bring happiness. Their success should be an inspiration to all of us.

Jim Carrey

Beginning in the 1990s Jim had a string of successful movies, making him one of Hollywood’s biggest comedians. However, what many people didn’t know is that he has suffered from bouts of both substance abuse and depression. He admitted in 2004 to having used Prozac extensively, but was able to turn his life around and has continued to remain successful in the very fickle Hollywood.

Halle Berry

To the outside observer it would appear that Halle has everything a woman could want, such as beauty, youth and wealth. She was married to MLB player David Justice, but when the two split in 1996, she revealed in an interview with the publication Parade that she had considered suicide. She also stated that she often felt she had poor self-worth, which was incredible to many give her good looks. Since that interview Halle Berry has turned her life around, entered a new relationship and started a family, and has continued to star in hit movies for more than two decades, a feat that very few actresses can pull off.

Jon Hamm

Jon Hamm, who stars in Mad Men, made headlines when he announced that he would be entering a rehab center in order to be treated for alcohol abuse. He has also spoken frankly about his struggles with depression and addiction. He also stated that he has used both antidepressants and therapy and found both to be effective, as they provided him with a different perspective that pulled him out of the spiral he had fallen into.

Miley Cyrus

Miley begin her career as a Disney star, but quickly shed this image to become the provocative, controversial star that some have described as a modern sex symbol. As with the other celebrities mentioned so far, her outside demeanor concealed something which she revealed during a 2014 interview with Elle, which is that she has suffered from both depression and low self-esteem , to the extent that it was necessary for her to receive treatment. Although Miley doesn’t care for medication as a solution, she isn’t opposed to it, and believes that one can benefit from talking to others.

These stories teach us a number of important lessons. First, the outward persona that people project, both famous and non-famous, is often not who they truly are. As such, you should never judge things or people at face value. Second, money and fame alone does not bring happiness. While these celebrities have overcome their demons, many other stars succumbed to them, dying of an overdose. If Hollywood’s rich and famous have issues with depression and low self-esteem, and are able to overcome it, then so can you.
